Title: Dressing a doll
Software: Corel PSP x6
Author: Sheryl
Home: SherylsPage
Tutorial Home: PSP
Skill Level: Intermediate and previous experience in working with pixels is required.
Supplies: Base, dress outline, color palette
Description: You will learn how to shade the doll's dress and draw shoes.
The supplies are in zip form so you'll need to copy it to your computer and then extract it if you want to follow along using my supplies. Feel free to use your own supplies or colors.

How I get my dress outline: I look through sales fliers or check out children's clothes on line to get ideas for my clothes. The dress we will be shading is a Carter's little girl dress.
Here is a picture of what I started with.

This tutorial was done using Corel PSP X6 but it should work with earlier or versions.

Before we get started, be sure you have your base, dress outline, and my color palette open in PSP, if you're going to be using my supplies.

Let's get started.

Step 1
Open a new image 200x200 with a white background.
Copy and paste the base as a new layer and call it base.
Copy and paste the dress as a new layer and call it dress outline.
Be sure to line up the dress the same way it's lined up in my example below.

Step 2
Select inside the lower dress with your magic wand and flood fill it with color 4, #ff85ae.
Select none.

Step 3
Add a new layer.
Call it highlights 1 and draw some highlights from the waste down using color 2, #ea5d86.

Step 6
Add a new layer.
Call it top.
Select inside all the top area of the dress. The parts that haven't been filled yet and flood fill it with color 4. (See step 2)
Select none.

Step 7
Use colors 2, 3, and 5 and add highlights in much the same manner as you did for the bottom of the dress.
Add a new layer for each color.
This is how mine looks.

Step 8 (Optional)
Add a new layer and call it design
I used a very light pink, #ffddee, and drew some lines on the top to make a pattern.
If you want to draw the same pattern as me, save this attached black pattern to your computer and copy and paste it as a new layer on top of the last dress layer.
Add a new layer and pixel the pattern with a light color.

Step 9 (Optional)
I drew some lace around the bottom of the dress and the outside of the sleeves using #cccccc for the outline and #f1f0ee for the fill.
I've put both ruffles on a gray background. If you want to use them, save this to your computer and add new layers for the sleeve ruffle and the dress ruffle.
Pixel the ruffles then copy and paste under your dress outline.

Step 10
Turn off your background layer and the base and merge visible.
Rename this dress.
Save.

Step 11: Shoe
Add a new layer and call it left shoe.
Using color 1 from the shoe-sock palette, draw the outline for the shoe.

shoe outline

Using color # 2, pixel along some of the inside edges like this.

shoe filling

Use color # 4 to form more of the inside shoe outline like this.

shoe fill

Continue filling in the shoe using colors 3 and 5-8.
Use the lighter shades around the toes for some bright highlights.
Save.

Step 12: Sock
Add a new layer and call it left sock.
Drag this layer under your left shoe layer
Use color 9 and draw the outline for the sock. You don't really have to worry about the parts that are covered by the shoe.

sock outline

Use colors 10 and 11 and pixel along the inside edges.
Leave a small area in the middle of the sock and use white to finish coloring in the sock.
Save.

Step 13
Right click the sock layer and duplicate.
Go to Image > Flip horizontal and place the copy on the right foot.

Step 14
Sit on the left shoe layer.
Right click and duplicate.
Go to Image > Flip horizontal and place the copy on the right foot.
Save.

Your doll is done.

Step 15
Delete the background layer and merge visible.
Copy and paste as a new image.
I do this step to get rid of the unnecessary background.
Save as a pspimage or export it to Picture Tube.
