Adding a dress and shading it.

You will need

Corel Paint Shop Pro. You can get a trial version HERE

I drew this dress using Corel PSP X2 but it should work with earlier versions.
You need to have a good working knowledge of psp and working with pixels in order to do this tutorial.
You should also have a base to put the dress on.
I'm assuming you did my base, eyes, and hair tutorial so open them now.
Don’t forget to save often.

We will be making a red dress with a collar and trim around the arms and then finish our doll off with some Mary Jane style shoes.
They always look cute on a doll.
I'm not going to explain how I came up with the outline for the dress because this involves using vectors.
I'll let you use my outline and then explain how I shaded it.
Let's get started.
Save my outline to your computer and open it in The Animation shop since it's a gif.
Export it to PSP and copy and paste it as a new layer on your bass canvass.

Now zoom in 800% so you can see what you're doing.
I used #81020b for the dress outline and filled it with #c56068. I used #c1bab7 for the collar and trim and filled it with #ededed.
You can pick what ever colors you like.
If you're going to use my colors, you really don't need to do anything to the outline but if you're picking different colors,
here are some images of my outline and a guide telling you how to pixel the outside of it.
Be sure you add a new layer for the outline.
Since the dress is symetrical, you can pixel one side of it, duplicate it, then mirror it, or just pixel the entire dress.

Once you have your outline ready, select the inside and FF it with your fill color. I used #c56068. Select none.
Select inside the collar and sleeve trim and FF it with #ededed. Select none.
Add a new layer for some dark shading.
Using your dress outline color, pixel around the edges of the dress.
Add some dark lines across the chest, then dark lines running up the dress where you would imagine you'd see some folds.
Add a new layer and using white, draw some lines in between your dark folds and across the chest.

Here's an example of what I did.

Now might be a good time to save if you haven't already.
Go back to your dark shaded layer and add a Gaussian blur of 2.
In pspX2 you get to Gaussian blur by clicking Adjust>>Blur>>Gaussian blur.
You may get there going a different route in different versions of PSP.
Click the white highlighted layer and apply the same Gaussian blur.
Now stand on the filled dress layer and select the dress.
Invert the layer then click on the dark shaded layer and hit the delete key. Do the same for the white shaded layer, then deselect.
This gets rid of any stray pixels outside your dress.
Now your dress should be shaded.
Turn off all layers except the dress and shaded layers and merge visible.
Your dress should be done.
